Rail Fence Cipher
The rail fence cipher takes plaintext and diagonally positions the letters in a zig-zag fashion. The "rails" are the horizontal "boards" where we place the plaintext letters. The ciphertext is created by reading the letters horizontally, rail-by-rail, and appending the previous rail's letters, ignoring special characters and spaces along the way. Here again, we see that the values of the letters never change, only how we place them. Press the Random
